Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that it is highly unethical and lamentable to try to achieve political ends in the garb of religion and the nefarious designs of elements as are engaged in such activities would be foiled.
While addressing a meeting of parliamentary party of Pakistan Muslim League here on Thursday, Pervaiz said that publication of blasphemous sketches has hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims all over the world and the entire Muslim Ummah has risen in protest over this abominable act. He said assembly members should ensure their presence in the assembly session.
Provincial Minister for Law and Local Government Muhammad Basharat Raja, Minister for Communication and Works and General Secretary PML Punjab, Chaudhry Zaheer ud din, Minister for Agriculture Arshad Khan Lodhi, PML nominees for senate election, S.M. Zafar, Haroon Akhtar, Nilofar Bakhtiar and Gulshan Saeed were also present on this occasion.
The CM said that President General Pervez Musharraf has forcefully represented the stance of Muslim Ummah over publication of profane caricatures and while addressing a meeting of National Security Council on Wednesday he had said that he would raise this issue in the United Nations so that effective measures could be taken out to check such practices in future.
He said that in connection with centenary celebrations of Pakistan Muslim League, a countrywide convention of PML workers would be held on March 23 in Lahore in which PML enrolment campaign would be reviewed.
He said drafts of five new laws would be presented in the next assembly session therefore assembly members should ensure their presence on this occasion to represent their electorates as well as elect party nominees in senate election.
The meeting also adopted a resolution presented by Provincial Minister for Law and Local Government, Muhammad Basharat Raja expressing strong resentment and indignation over publication of objectionable caricatures, which were termed as a blatant violation of Islamic values, norms of decency and time-honoured traditions of freedom of expression. The efforts of federal government for effective representation of the cause of Muslims were also appreciated and it was demanded that these endeavours should be continued.
The resolution also condemned damages caused to public and private property on the pretext of protest and it was demanded that those involved should be awarded deterrent punishment.-PR
