Pace of construction work on developmental projects is very slow and Pak PWD should take strict measures for speedy construction work of approved schemes.
These observations were made by Senator Dr Muhamamd Ali Brohi during a meeting of Senate standing committee on works, environment, and urban affairs, held under his chairmanship, here on Thursday.
The committee members, who attended the meeting, were Senator Hafiz Abdul Malik Qadri, Senator Ms Shereen Noor, Senator Shuja ul Mulk, Senator Bibi Yasmeen Shah, Senator Maulana Rahat Hussain and Senator Syed Muhammad Hussain.
A detailed briefing was given to the committee by Pak PWD Chief Engineer Fateh ul Mulk regarding the development work of Tameer-e-Pakistan programme being done by the department on the schemes sponsored by the parliamentarians in the Punjab province. The chairman of the committee said that there should be no compromise on the standard of material.
Director General Local Government Punjab, Muhammad Shahbaz briefed the committee regarding the public sector development projects and submitted a progress report on the development schemes under the directives of the Prime Minister of Pakistan in the Punjab province from 2002 to 2005. Expressing its satisfaction, the committee directed the concerned departments that construction work on schemes should be more transparent. The issue of vacation of Chamba House from NAB also came under discussion and the standing committee directed Pak PWD to start construction of NAB offices as soon as possible so that Chamba House could be vacated from it, which will be used for stay of parliamentarians.
The meeting was also attended by Muzaffar Hussain, Joint Secretary Ministry of Housing and Works, Brigadier Qasim Abbas from NAB and Ali Akbar Sheikh, Director General Pak PWD.
