Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Federal Minister, Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Advisor to Prime Minister for Science and Technology has informed all public sector universities and degree awarding institutions that the quality criteria laid down by the Higher Education Commission must be strictly followed.
This includes quality requirements for PhD programmes such as passing of international subject GRE before formal admission to PhD thesis by two experts from technologically advanced countries, course work requirements etc. Similarly HEC criteria for appointment and promotion of faculty members are to be strictly observed.
It has also been decided that public sector universities and degree awarding institutions, which do not follow the HEC criteria, will have their recurring grants cut and the development grants withheld. PhD degrees from such universities will also not be recognised by the HEC. The Prime Minister of Pakistan has directed the HEC to ensure that all universities of the country must implement HEC quality criteria, so that the quality of education is not compromised.
