We are perhaps the only country on the face of this earth, which officially preaches " Enlightened Moderation", but whose establishment refuses to tolerate the right of dissent or believes in equal rights for the women.
We have made a mockery of our constitution, rule of law or basic civil rights. It is indeed a very polluted perception of what the word "enlightened moderation" means.
The State machinery perceives it to be the holding of charity balls, late night parties where scantily clad women are in plenty and wine is consumed till people drop dead. Victims of rape are scorned upon, if they dare to stand up and fight.
Muktaran Mai was abused, kept in illegal confinement, till international pressure forced the establishment to let go of this poor women. It was indeed her courage and will to fight, which sustained her in the end.
While we are supposed to be a democratic country, with the facade of a National Assembly and Senate, even basic civil rights like formation of professional associations representing various cadres working in State enterprises are not allowed to function. Civil society does not function in a civil manner.
When the Human Rights group wanted to have a mixed marathon in Lahore, the State allowed the clerics to stop them and the Punjab police was told to teach these women a lesson. These women had their clothes torn in public. However the State considers this to be the sole privilege of the sitting government to hold such mixed marathons in Lahore.
It is the hypocrisy and double standards of the State, which are obstacles to their campaign to represent Pakistan as a moderate and enlightened nation. Even the green tail of PIA, which was synonymous with the colour of Pakistan's flag, has been replaced by pale yellow, something which irritates most expatriates. The emotional flavour and colour of national flag carrier has become a victim to this distorted concept of moderation.
The Quaid's legacy that Pakistan be run as a modern welfare State and supremacy of constitutional rule alone will make this country a moderate, enlightened and developed society, where the government is accountable for all its actions and frivolous expenditures.
