The publication of derogatory cartoons of the Holy Prophet of Islam (SAW) is an abuse of so-called freedom of the press, and depicts the total lack of respect for sensitivities of over 1.5 billion Muslims.
However the recent outburst of violent demonstrations in Pakistan, triggered though they are by these cartoons, but that alone is not the sole raison dêtre. The cartoons alone would have triggered a somber protest, but the violence and destruction of government buildings and public assets manifest the anger and frustration of the people against the policies of regime in power.
The recent spike in prices of essential items like sugar and wheat and the deterioration of law and order, rising unemployment etc, have been the major factor for violent reaction.
People are angry over the loot and plunder by the so-called elite, while they are denied basic needs like health, education, clean drinking water and equal opportunities for employment.
The mishandling of Baluchistan crisis, use of excess force to suppress their legitimate demands, have angered the nation. The manner, in which the sovereignty of the nation has been compromised, by a regime that relies solely on support of foreign powers, is another factor.
This has created a dangerous void between the people and those who wield power. The government relies on statistics like foreign reserves etc, the people are angered over subsidies like import of luxurious limousines for the rich, while the state refuses to subsidise items of daily use by the masses.
Pakistan's railway, which was once an efficient and safe mode of transport, is today in a state of disarray. Frequency of fatal accidents and derailments has become so common that people are afraid to travel, although they have no other option. Whatever investment was made did not bear any fruit.
On the other hand the national airline, PIA, has been provided with billions of dollars, to induct the latest high-tech aircraft's worth $150 million apiece, to please the elitist who want to have the best and latest models of cars, and play golf.
There is still time for restoration of true democratic process, in which the people through their representatives, have a feel that they are part of the decision-making process. The rule of law should be restored and those in power be held accountable for misuse of official powers and public office.
