The reports of bird flu in NWFP and apprehensions of its spread in Sindh have affected 70 percent of the poultry trade in Hyderabad. Owing to decline in poultry trade and consumption of chicken meat, a number of restaurants have been closed rendering hundreds of daily-wagers jobless.
Saeed Ahmed, president of Hotel, Sheermall, Pakwan Association Hyderabad told PPI that over 500 workers had been discharged from over 100 restaurants as their business was severely affected due to rumours of bird flu outbreak.
According to him, over two dozen restaurants had been closed. KFC shift supervisor Suneel Kumar said the number of their customers had also declined.
Hyderabad Poultry Association President Muhammad Sharif said there were about 1,000 poultry shops in the city of which a large number had been closed causing colossal financial losses to poultry farmers, poultry shopkeepers and the workers.
Executive District Officer, Hyderabad, Dr Nazar Muhammad Junejo said on the orders of Sindh government, the Health Department had set up isolation wards at the hospitals while ban had been imposed on employing the persons of age below 12 years and over 60 years at poultry farms. Moreover, the people working at poultry farms have been directed to use masks, long shoes, hand-gloves and spectacles at the work site.
