Complete shutter down was observed on Friday, as all political parties, religious groups, traders and transporters supported the strike call given by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal to condemn the publication of blasphemous sketches in western newspapers.
All industrial units, including flourmills remained closed, as there was no transport on roads. Colleges and private educational institutes had already announced their holiday.
Hotels also kept their business locked to observe the strike. Attendance at government offices was very thin. Lawyers boycotted their professional duties to observe black day on the strike call of Pakistan Bar Council.
The lawyers held a protest meeting to express their resentment against the condemnable act of some western newspapers. All political parties, including Tehrik-e-Insaf, Muslim League-N, Pakistan Democratic Party took part in a rally organised by Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) after Juma Prayer.
The rally, led by Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Secretary General of MMA, Nawabzada Mansoor Ahmed Khan, Vice President, ARD, Syed Jalil Haider Naqvi, Liaquat Baloch and other local leaders, was taken out from Qasim Bagh to Ghanta Ghar Chowk.
Meanwhile, district administrations have taken strict security measures to maintain law and order in Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahimyar Khan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, Leiah, Sahiwal, Vehari, Lodhran, Khanewal and Pakpattan.
Rangers, elite force and police personnel deployed at different sensitive places, including government installations to avert any untoward incident, while mobiles of law enforcement agencies were patrolling in urban areas to maintain the law and order situation.
