Minister for Textile Industry, Mushtaq Ali Cheema said on Saturday, an action plan is under preparation to remove the grievances and problems of country's knitwear industry. He was speaking at the meeting held here on Saturday to review the recommendations of the committee for action plan.
The minister said on the recommendation of Prime Minister a committee had been formed for preparation of a comprehensive action plan for development of knitwear industry, which is under crises after abolition of quota regime.
The Prime Minister himself is keen for development of this sector. The committee reviewed the situation and assessed various measures, says a press release.
The meeting recommended that a transparent mechanism should be implemented to ensure smooth refund of sales tax.
It is pertinent to mention here that from July 2005, the sales tax on textile raw material has already been abolished for export oriented industries.
It was also recommended that land would be provided on affordable price to knitwear industry in the textile city and garment city projects where land is available with other infrastructure facilities and on competitive price.
The meeting recommended that to meet the requirement of skilled workers, the skill development programme should be launched while import of cheaper skilled workers from Sri Lanka and other country may be allowed.
The meeting recommended that the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) should launch a market access programme for knitwear industry and besides the US and EU, the market access in Asean, China, Japan, Korea and OIC countries be explored.
On the occasion, chairman EPB informed that warehousing facilities would be provided in Karachi which will be provided to textile industries on nominal charges and for this purpose the Sindh government has already assured to provide 20 acres land.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Textile Industry, Syed Masood Alam Rizvi, Chairman EPB, Tariq Ikram, Textile Commissioner, Muhammad Idrees and representatives of the ministries of commerce, industries, finance, State Bank of Pakistan and other senior officers of the ministry of textile industry.
