A meeting of the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) will be held on March 6 in Lahore, while Federal Food, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Sikandar Hayat Bosan will chair the meeting to assess the exact cotton crop production.
Officials in the ministry are hopeful that the production of cotton crop 2005-06 is likely to be around 13 million bales, as floods caused damage to standing crop on 350,000 to 400,000 acres in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Muzaffargarh areas.
Despite such a calamity, the officials are hopeful that the crop production would be above 13 million bales, as the crop in other cotton growing areas was good.
However, it would cross the earlier set target of 12.7 million bales, but would not meet the target of 15 million bales.
If the crop size stands at 13 million bales, there will be a need to meet the shortfall through imports since the domestic consumption is estimated to be around 14.5 million to 15 million bales, said a textile miller.
Mills are in need of one and a half million bales more and this is one of the strong factors, which make the market bullish. The rates of cotton would increase on demand in near future, he added.
The meeting is likely to be attended by ADC, Minfal DC, FDPP, vice-president, PCCC, Secretary Agriculture Sindh, other senior officers of the department, TCP, representatives of PCGA, KCA, and growers.
