Injured England paceman Simon Jones has been ruled out of the rest of the three-test series with India. A statement from the England cricket board on Monday said Jones underwent an arthroscopy last Friday after sustaining an injury to his left knee before the first test in Nagpur.
The statement added: "Simon has been ruled out of the current test series in India and at this stage it is thought unlikely that he will be available for the forthcoming one-day international series."
The second match of the test series starts on Thursday. The one-day series will be played from March 28 to April 15.
Monday's news is the latest injury setback for the 27-year-old Glamorgan man and adds to the touring party's woes.
England captain Michael Vaughan has already been ruled out of the test series after the recurrence of a knee problem before the test in Nagpur, which ended in a draw on Sunday.
England are also without vice-captain Marcus Trescothick, who returned home for personal reasons.
Jones was one of the Ashes heroes last year, displaying his mastery over reverse swing to claim 18 wickets in the 2-1 win.
However, he was sidelined for the final test at The Oval due to an ankle injury which required surgery and forced him out of the Pakistan tour which followed.
Jones had fought back from a career-threatening right knee injury he suffered while fielding in the first Test in Brisbane on the 2002-3 Ashes tour.
The bowler had prepared for the India series with a 10-day stint at the MRF pace academy in Chennai under former Australia paceman Dennis Lillee. He twisted his left knee while bowling at the nets two days before the Nagpur Test and was escorted off the field in tears.
