Ukraine plans to intervene on the domestic sugar market to lower prices, but has not decided to start sugar imports yet, a senior government official said on Tuesday. Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Melnyk said the government would also limit trade profits on the retail market.
Ukraine's Prime Minister said this week the jump in domestic sugar prices could prompt the government to start sugar imports. Melnyk said such supplies could be from Belarus and Moldova.
Ukraine says it produced 1.9 million tonnes of beet sugar from the 2005 crop and had about 400,000 tonnes of sugar from previous crops. Annual domestic consumption stands at about two million tonnes.
