Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), Karachi, Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, informed business community on Tuesday that the police department is going to launch a three-year, stage-vise implementation program to streamline the working of police department and computerise its records, including First Information Report (FIR) record and registration system.
Addressing members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), he said that under the proposed program a police web-site would be developed which would have complete record of car registration, name of car owner and tax paid by the owner, complete arms licence record and tax paid or tax due on arms owners.
He said that the web-site would also provide facility of online applying for character certificate and, after verification of contents, the applicants would get their character certificate on the given address.
The web-site will also have record of current crimes.
He said that the department has planned to offer complaint filing facility through SMS. The department will reply each and every SMS it would receive.
Niaz said that the department is negotiating with complainants to provide free of cost SMS to complaints facility.
He said that department was also establishing dispute resolution unit. This unit will help people to resolve their disputes out of court.
He said that the department is revamping women police station as well as posting one woman police official in each police station. This would help women complainants to explain their problems in a better way.
He said that beside this the department is also establishing an accident prevention cell. This cell will work for the safety of general public, and help accident victims. The police web-site will have the accident record and where the accident victims were shifted and in which hospital they were admitted.
He said that the department is also establishing a cyber crime cell. Incidents of web-site hacking, online account hacking, credit card misuse, e-mail hacking etc is on the increase, he added
Regarding mobile phone snatching, Niaz said that there were around 700,000 mobile phone sets in the country issued on fake national identity cards.
He said that out of six mobile companies only two have imparted SIM and mobile set blocking system. Out of these two companies, only one has activated the system. The rest have been directed to import and activate the system by March 31, 2006, otherwise they would not be able to offer new connections.
He advised the general public not to resist attempt of mobile phone snatching. "Your life is more precious than the mobile phone", he added.
Welcoming the guests, KCCI President Haroon Farooki said that the Chamber has donated three mobile vehicles in the past and this number will be doubled in the next three months.
