The Federal government is working on a plan to help the knitwear and garment industry for developing better quality skilled manpower through training programmes in industrial units.
In this regard, Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry, Syed Masood Alam Rizvi held a joint meeting with Textile Commissioner, Muhammad Idrees Ahmed and representatives of Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA) and Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Prgmea) in Lahore, to discuss plan to give boost to the industry.
According to the plan, training facilities would be arranged within the premises of industrial units so that, besides usual classroom instructions, intensive practical training could be imparted to labour force, to create sources for regular supply of skilled technicians for the value added textile sector, which is now a major means for foreign exchange earning for the country.
The secretary textile industry assured that the government was committed to provide all out assistance, including financial support for this plan to be implemented through the private-public partnership. The plan envisages creation of training facilities in the woven and knitted garment sector and the government will bear a sizeable component of the financial costs.
The plan also provides policy of paying stipend and providing transport facilities to the trainees. Trainers for the programme are already available in the country and it is expected that this plan will result in better productivity of labour force and improve quality in the garment manufacturing. It is also expected that the government will soon launch the project.
The plan is an outcome of the vision of Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan, who is keen to enhance the productivity and efficiency of labour force and reduce wastage in this important sector.
Idrees Ahmed, Textile Commissioner and Shahzad Azam Khan, Central Chairman, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association are playing dynamic role not only in this plan but also other initiatives for promotion of the apparel industry.
The PHMA and Prgmea have lauded the government's consideration and the personal initiative of Syed Masood Alam Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry for upgrading the level of skills in garment sector so that the ability of industry could be enhanced to compete internationally.
