The provincial government will set up a Model Drug Addicts Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Karachi soon. "A blueprint of the project has already been prepared," a Narcotics Ministry spokesman said here.
It will be a third such centre in the country as two others are already functioning in Islamabad and Quetta. Similar facilities would gradually be established in other major cities, the spokesman said, adding that more than 250 addicts had been treated at the Islamabad centre since its inception in July last year and another 116 at the Quetta centre since October.
According to official statistics there were up to 4 million drug addicts in the country, among them 2.5 million are heroin consumers and 60,000 injecting drugs, the spokesman said.
He said on the special direction of the prime minister these centers would impart vocational training to the addicts enabling them to live a normal life after being discharged.
