The board of directors of Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appreciated the performance of Nazim Karachi and praised his vision for reconstruction, progress and future of Karachi.
A joint meeting of the members of the ADB's board of directors led by Executive Director Stephen Sedwick and executive officers of City District Government Karachi was held here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary, Ghulam Sarwar Khehro.
The Nazim Karachi, Syed Mustafa Kamal, briefed the ADB board members about Karachi's mega projects and future planning.
Stephen and other board members observed that Nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal has given better performance in lesser time and appreciated the same. They particularly described as satisfactory his priorities for providing facilities to common people and the pace of work thereof.
They were appreciative of his planning for a better future, steps taken against corruption and running the administrative and financial affairs in a transparent manner. The board members asserted that the pace of work should be maintained and assured of World Bank's co-operation in this regard.
Briefing the board members, Nazim Karachi informed that at present various mega projects are under implementation at a cost of Rs 5,122 million while Rs 6.5 billion are being spent on federally assisted schemes of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.
He said the federal government has also approved new projects costing Rs 2.1 billion while yet another project for improvement of sewerage system costing Rs 6.2 billion is under preparation, in which sewerage treatment plants will be installed.
Mustafa Kamal told the meeting that infrastructure development work is in progress in all the four industrial estates in Karachi at a cost of Rs 2.9 billion while all the towns were executing schemes for water and sewerage improvement at a cost of Rs 90 million.
He pointed out that PC-1 for Rs 700 million Textile City Water Supply Scheme is under preparation while Jaica is preparing the master plan of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board with Rs 190 million financial support.
He said that an agreement has been signed with a Malaysian company for construction of an elevated expressway from Quaidabad Bridge to Jinnah Bridge with the cost of 225 million dollars and said the work has started thereon.
He listed construction of garbage lifting stations, Malir Embankment Expressway costing Rs 2 billion, coastal highway estimated to cost Rs 4,269 million, Mass Transit I and II, Karachi Circular Railway etc as some other mega projects of the future.
He said his vision for Karachi also includes master plan for Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, environmental improvement, transport, parks and recreation, development of infrastructure, streamlining of solid waste management on modern lines, health and education, encouragement to investment and establishing a corruption-free transparent local government system.
Mustafa Kamal said that mega projects will be carried out with 400 million dollars assistance from the World Bank which would bring far reaching changes.
He said earlier the city organisations were working on ad hoc basis, but present City Government streamlined their working under planning.
The Nazim said that Karachi has become highly congested and, therefore, GIS-based master plan is being prepared which will also include planning for development of residential areas in the barren localities of Gadap and Malir Towns. He also said that in the master plan, planning and infrastructures for new areas are being highlighted in respect of health and education and parks.
He said harsh measures have been taken to check corruption in the city government's departments. However, corruption could be controlled to a great extend after e-government becomes effective for which on MoU is to be signed with a noted company.
