In continuation of its commitment towards community development, Aga Khan University's (AKU) Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) organised a 'Cleanliness Day' in Sultanabad, a squatter settlement of Karachi said a press release issued here on Wednesday
The event was organised in order to mobilise the community to address the on-going trash problems that face urban slum areas, and to sensitise the community stakeholders about the importance of garbage disposal, cleanliness and environmental hygiene.
The Community Health Management Association (CHMA) collaborated with AKU is the organiser of the event, which involved community members, children from local schools, the Union Council Nazim and the Counsellors, CHS Residents and Masters Students and OHS faculty and staff.
Dr Gregory Pappas, Director of CHS, who was present on the occasion, said it was important to involve the community in garbage disposal activity and to disseminate education that would help resolve the problem of environmental hygiene by promoting a sustainable community participation process.
"I hope this event will galvanise the community to hold monthly Cleanliness Days" he commented.
