Specialty African coffee grower Rwanda plans to open its first coffee shops in hopes of weaning citizens away from their current favourite beverage - tea.
"Local coffee consumption in this country is very minimal - not in any way comparable to that of tea," Leon Haguma, commercial manager of Rwanda's coffee authority, Ocir cafe, said on Wednesday.
"We hope by introducing the coffee shops, we shall steadily increase the rate of coffee consumption," he told Reuters.
Haguma said Rwandans should take a leaf from giant coffee producers Brazil and Ethiopia, where local consumption is high.
Coffee is Rwanda's top export and officials say it should be a source of national pride to drink it. The introduction of coffee shops is also seen as a tool for widening the coffee market and increasing incomes for local farmers, Haguma said.
