Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Friday directed the concerned authorities to set up units of alternate energy in backward areas of the province, especially the Thar desert, to produce electricity without consuming any fuel that would also help control the pollution.
He was presiding over a meeting at the Governor House. Advisor to the Chief Minister for Environment & Alternate Energy, Noman Saigol, secretary of his department Iqbal Dewan, director Iqbal Saeed Khan and other officials attended the meeting.
The governor was informed that first time in the country, a Directorate of Alternate Energy has been established in the Sindh province, which would work for setting up of alternate energy units in Karachi and rest of the province.
These units that include wind turbines, biogas units etc would be pollution-free powerhouses with production capacity of 100MW electricity. These powerhouses would meet the requirement of those villages consisting of few houses lacking such facility.
Governor Ibad appreciated such move and suggested convincing the foreign companies and other organisations working on community welfare system in the education and health sectors to install alternate energy units at their projects.
The governor was further told that Solar Power Parks would soon be established as pilot project. Initially, two such parks would be established. Moreover, stalls would be set up across the province to create awareness among the people about solar and other alternate energy sources.
The department of environment would also organise exhibitions on the alternate energy to display how the electricity could be produced. The representatives of NGOs and foreign organisations would be invited to such programmes.
