The volume of unemployment in Pakistan has declined by only 0.03 million during 2003-04 as compared to 2001-02 when it stood at 3.51 million, however, unemployment in males has increased as compared to females.
The volume of unemployed people has reduced to 3.48 million in 2003-04. However, male employment has declined while female's climbed more than two percent, revealed 'Compendium on Gender Statistics in Pakistan' jointly compiled by the Federal Bureau and Statistics (FBS) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The report further mentioned that rural areas have followed national pattern while unemployment surged in the number in urban areas.
Agriculture and allied industry, with 43 percent of the total employed in 2003-04 increased by one percentage point as compared to 2001-02 but on the contrary non-agriculture sector had depicted a sort of enervation.
For instance, in construction and community, social and persons services, the employment ratio dropped by 0.3 percentage point (5.8 percent) and 0.5 percentage point (15 percent) respectively during the period under review. The report further mentioned that employability of secondary and tertiary activities have generally decreased.
The report, which compared the status of employment in major industries, revealed that in a span of two years, the employment in agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing went up by one percentage point to 43.1 percent.
The employment in all occupational groups has, more or less, flattened except in skilled agricultural and fishery workers (34.7 versus 34.9 percent) followed by elementary occupations (19 versus 20.3 percent), together accounted for more than half of the employed labour force.
Female employment has scaled down across-the-board except in skilled, agriculture and fishery workers, whereas male employment notched up in senior officials, managers, and bottom elementary occupations.
