Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan has said that President General Pervez Musharraf will soon inaugurate Sprinkle and Drip Irrigation system in the country.
The government was making day and night efforts for beneficial and wise use of water, he said while speaking at a function here on Saturday. He also witnessed an exhibition of diesel engines on this occasion.
He said that sprinkle and drip irrigation system would help irrigation in those areas also where provision of water was almost impossible. He said that 80 percent fund would be provided by the government for this project while 20 percent would be given by the peasants.
He said that the government was striving to make agriculture a profitable field for the peasants and the steps being taken now for development of this sector were never taken in the past.
The federal minister further said that Pakistan was an agricultural country and its economy also depended on this vital sector. He said that 24 percent of country's GDP consist of agriculture sector while 45 percent of the population was associated with this field. He said that without developing this sector the country could not develop economically. He said that agricultural engineering could play a very important role in this regard.
Later talking to newsmen, he said that there was no bird flu in the country. Nevertheless position would be cleared on results of samples sent to London, he added. He said that support price for next crop of sugarcane would be announced after consultation with the provincial governments.
