It has become almost impossible for PTCL subscribers to get connected with inquiry number 17. When a subscriber dials 17, a female voice comes up saying "Thank you for calling PTCL directory assistance. We are sorry, but all operators are busy assisting subscribers. Please wait; you will be connected to the first available operator."
Then it is repeated ad nauseam and the 'first available operator' is hard to get. Similarly, when a PTCL subscriber tries to catch a cell number, immediately, in the first attempt, he fails. Only after three or four attempts, the system rewards him of his efforts.
When contacted for comments, PTCL spokesman Ali Qadir Gilani said that it was not in the notice of the company that anything like this existed. "We would seriously take it up at the highest level for the sake of our subscribers", he said.
About the connectivity problem with cell numbers, he said that it was not the fault in the landline, but the problem may be on the part of cell phone companies as they operate through satellite.
