Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Saturday asked Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) to enhance its coverage from 96 percent to 100 percent population besides catering to the maximum number of overseas Pakistanis.
The minister observed this during a briefing on goals and targets set by Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC).
He directed PBC to privatise its marketing department to capture its maximum share in advertisement sector from the public as well as private entrepreneurs.
He said, the PBC should also undertake commercially viable projects.
He further said that PBC should make arrangements for a comprehensive briefing for Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in the next week.
Director General PBC Tarique Imam gave detailed briefing to the minister on various projects to be carried out by the PBC.
He apprised the minister that PBC has targeted to set up 47 FM stations by 2009 in the parts of the country with special emphasis on the remote and comparatively less developed areas like FATA and Northern Areas.
He said six FM stations had already been set-up while other six would soon be operational. He said out of the total, 11 FM stations would be set up in Balochistan while the needs of people in Northern Areas and FATA would also be properly looked after.
He said the PBC has plans to modernise its existing 30 MW and 2 SW stations in phases as the equipment and machinery at these stations is going outdated with the passage of time.
He said the PBC has plans to integrate all its nation-wide stations through Local Area Network computer system besides establishing an IT centre by upgrading the existing academy to suffice the modern training needs in the broadcast sector at the local as well as regional level.
Additional Secretary Ministry of Information Ahsan Yusaf and Director General Internal Publicity Wing Rashid Ahmed were also present.
