More than 140,000 workers of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) have not allowed the privatisation of Wapda. Addressing a largely attended rally, Pakistan Wapda Hydropower Central Labour Union (PWHCLU) leaders strongly opposed Wapda's privatisation here on Saturday.
The rally held at Mareer Chowk and was addressed by Khurshid Ahmed, Secretary General, Abdul Hameed Nizamani, Ramzan Achakzai, Lateef Khan and other trade union leaders.
They were of the view that the privatisation of Wapda is continuity of the anti-people policies of the government and being done on the directive of the World Bank and other financial institutions.
They threatened to hold a countrywide strike on April 5 against the privatisation of Wapda and other profitable public sector enterprises.
They opined that the government, in spite of making money out of sale of its assets, should frame policies to make country's economy stable through positive means.
Wapda's low-paid employees during the rally were beating chests against the price-hike and asked the government to control prices of essential commodities to save people from starvation. They said that people with very low income had no other option but to commit suicide.
