The appointment of Ambassador, Izzat Kamal Mufti as Special Representative of the Secretary General of Organisation of Islamic Conference would go a long way in projecting the Kashmir issue in its true perspective.
Welcoming the appointment of Ambassador Mufti, the Chairman, Parliamentary Kashmir Committee, Hamid Nasir Chattha said, it is a much-awaited step in the right direction, says a press release issued here by National Assembly Secretariat on Saturday. He said, the OIC has passed numerous resolutions calling for the implementation of the UN resolution on Kashmir, the end of human rights violations in the region as well as the peaceful resolution of the issue. However, appointment of the special representative is a concrete step, which should have been taken earlier, he added.
The chairman special committee observed that a delegation of European Parliament visited both parts of Jammu and Kashmir and called the Indian occupied Kashmir as "the most beautiful prison in the world". He said, the delegation also called for appointment of a Reporter and appealed to the European Parliament to go ahead with the appointment of the Reporter. About past, Hamid Chattha said, requests were made to the United Nations Secretary General for appointing a special envoy on Kashmir. Similarly, a resolution was also moved in the US Congress, calling for appointment of a special envoy on Kashmir by the US President.
The chairman said, it is high time that the UN Secretary General and US President appointed their envoys on Kashmir. These envoys can share information and co-ordinate efforts, which can help to evolve a strategy for the early resolution of the problem.
