Indian investigators have released eight people detained on suspicion of being involved in triple bombings that killed 23 people in Varanasi, Hinduism's holiest city, police said Sunday.
The suspects were held after a raid at a guesthouse in Hardoi, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the state capital Lucknow late Friday. G.K. Goswami, a senior police official in Varanasi said two of the six were brought to the pilgrimage city because they fitted the description of suspects who planted a bomb in a shop that was defused before it exploded.
The two were paraded in front of witnesses but were let off as they were not identified by them, Goswami said. "Police have verified the addresses given by these two which were found to be correct," Goswami added.
The other six detainees were also released in Hardoi, a police spokesman said.
