Amidst rising tension, Pakistan and Afghanistan are all set to establish first-ever bus service from March 15, 2006. A trial bus would reach Pakistan's north-western city of Peshawar from Afghanistan's eastern Jalalabad Town.
"There is no change in the schedule of bus service yet, but final decision would be taken by the Foreign Office on Tuesday, an official of the Ministry of Communications told Business Recorder on Monday.
Communication Joint Secretary Firdaus Alam, who headed Pakistani delegation during talks with the Afghan authorities told Business Recorder that the trial run of the bus is likely to take place from March 15. About recent attack on Sibghatullah Mujaddadi, chairman, Senate and former president of Afghanistan, Firdaus said the tragic incident would not affect the scheduled bus service.
"I don't think it will affect commencement of Peshawar-Jalalabad bus service. However, Foreign Office response is still awaited in this regard," he added.
Pakistan and Afghanistan have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in February this year to establish first-ever land communication service. According to the joint communiqué, it was agreed that the trial bus service would take place from Afghanistan side on March 15 and would be leaving from Pakistan on March 17. The trial run would be followed by a regular bus service within a month. Around five buses would ply on the route on daily basis.
