NWFP Minister for Local government and Rural Development, Sardar Mohammad Idrees informed the Frontier Assembly on Tuesday that for the provision of clean drinking water to people the provincial government was going to install water filtration plants at union council level.
Speaking in response to a question of MMA MPA from Mardan, Amanat Shah, the NWFP Minister informed the house that the PC-I of the project had already been approved, adding that each union council would have it's own water filtration plant in short span of time. He said that the provincial government had directed all district governments and TMAs to release maximum funds for the water supply schemes to ensure clean drinking water to the people as soon as possible.
The house witnessed a long debate on the question of MMA MPA from Dir Lower, Dr Zakirullah Khan regarding detailed number and performance of the road porters in the province.
In supplementary questions, Abdul Akbar Khan of PPP-Parliamentarians, Bashir Ahmad Bilour of ANP, Jamshid Khan of PPP-Sherpao and Habib-ur-Rehman of MMA urged that the provincial government should frame a specific policy to fill the vacant posts of porters in the province.
Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani of PML-Q and Mohammad Jehangir of MMA also demanded details regarding the vacant posts of porters in the province.
Regarding road porters, Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Malik Zafar Azam said that due to poor performance of the porters the vacant posts were not filled to save funds for repair and maintenance of the roads.
He said that the province was short of 3640 porters while 3067 were still employed with the government, but no one was satisfied with their performance.
He said that all related information had been provided to the concerned standing committee, which was expected to take a final decision shortly.
Abdul Akbar Khan asked to know that those presently employed porters were performing their duties and getting their salaries while sitting in their homes.
Mian Nisar Gul said that he had asked for the detail information, but despite passage of six months no such information had been provided to him.
The provincial minister assured that the required information would be provided to the members within ten days. He also dispelled the impression regarding the withdrawal of the some powers from district governments.
He said that after a detail discussion by the standing committee the government would ultimately take some steps for the resolution of the problem.
Giving his ruling, Speaker Bakht Jehan Khan, who was presiding over the house, said that the conditions of the roads were deteriorated in the province as there was no proper repair and maintenance system and urged the government to ensure that road porters should perform their duties judiciously.
