Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister for Local Government Wasim Akhtar has said that the present government has taken many steps to improve living standard of the people.
Speaking at a seminar on "Empowering Consumers to Demand Quality Goods and Services" organised by the Consumers Association of Pakistan, he emphasised on creating awareness among the masses for their rights.
The adviser said that he and his party believed to serve people without any discrimination and added that people should also strengthen the government so that their problems could be solved immediately.
Abdul Ghaffar Soomro, Director General of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority, said that there were only few consumer associations functioning in the country.
Without active participation of masses and in large number the issue of provision of quality products to the consumers would not be solved, he added.
Somroo said that provision of quality products, services and utilities was the basic right of consumers and for this they would have to come forward.
Former Karachi University vice chancellor Dr Abdul Wahab told the audience that there were very strong consumer associations in the Western countries, which successfully protect the consumers rights.
Kaukab Iqbal, Chairman Consumer Association of Pakistan, Engineer Farida Essa, Zahid Mumtaz, Naim Patel, Shams Burney also spoke on the occasion.
