Chaudhry Hanif Gujjar, Secretary General, Pakistan Kisan Movement, said the sugarcane growers are quite happy with the profits they have made on their cane crop during ongoing crushing season.
While addressing a group of farmers who met him on Wednesday, Gujjar said high prices of sugarcane impacted the buying power of general consumers due to high sugar prices. He urged the consumers to bear with the situation in larger interest of the growers, as the farming community is backbone of the country's economy.
According to him, the growers are hard pressed due to rising cost of production; however, this year has come after many years, which has been a jackpot for farmers. Since many years due to low prices of sugar, which benefited the consumers directly, this time the situation is different and growers are in a position to sell their cane at a higher price due to shortage of sugarcane to mills, he said. He said the growers fully back federal government's policies due to which the farmers have been benefited and are getting good return on sugarcane crop.
The farmers also spoke on the occasion and said that they were getting Rs 80,000 to 100,000 per acre for selling sugarcane this year. They also reaffirmed their support to the leadership of Pakistan Kissan Movement for raising the voice of farming community and projecting their cause at all forums.-PR
