Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that protection of heritage items and highlighting their historical significance is part of our responsibilities.
He said that Pak students in and outside the country, involved in research, can be facilitated with research-related references by providing them data regarding historical materials.
He was presiding over a meeting at Governor's House in which the performance of the Archives Department was reviewed.
Sindh CM's Advisor on Information and Archives Salahuddin Haider and Director Press G.M. Iqbal while giving details about performance of the Archives Department said that it has been made functional for scientific preservation of historical materials.
The meeting was informed that heads of various government and non-government organisations in Sindh have been contacted for preservation of pre-independence historical scripts and valuable items.
These contacts revealed about presence of unique and ancient books in libraries in various cities like Hyderabad. Shikarpur, Thatta, Larkana, etc. Besides, pre-Pakistan historical events which were brought on paper by important personalities of those days are also lying scattered at various places.
The Archives Department is preserving these precious hooks, items and letters through micro-films so that these are made accessible to people from within and outside Pakistan for historical references without any problem.
The governor was informed that a section of the new building of the Archives Department has been earmarked for old books, newspapers and scripts while other section has been developed into a gallery where ancient items have been put on display under protection and a large number of people come from abroad to have a look at them.
Dr Ibad called upon the officials of Archives Department to highlight the civilised heritage of Sindh.
He called for utilising scientific methods for the preservation of historical references and use computer facility for this purpose.
The Sindh governor directed the Archive Department to immediately set up its web site for people all over the world to benefit from research materials.
Dr Ibad pointed out that many people, who took part in Pakistan Movement, are living a life of seclusion. He asked the Archives Department to collect information about them and bring eye witness account of Pakistan Movement into writing.
