Pakistan Muslim League Secretary General, Senator Mushahid Hussain, said here on Sunday that use of force was not the solution of any problem; therefore, all disputes, including the issues of Iraq and Kashmir, should be resolved through negotiations, using political means.
Addressing a press conference here at PML House, along with PML Secretary, Information, Senator Tariq Azeem Khan, Mushahid said that three years' war in Iraq had proved that Pakistan's stand on Iraq war was absolutely right.
He said that Pakistan had condemned the Iraq war at that time, and Parliament also discussed the issue and passed unanimous resolutions to resolve the issue peacefully, instead of using force.
He appreciated the recent decision of America to hold negotiations with Iran to resolve the nuclear issue.
He said that force could not resolve any issue. Therefore, political means and negotiations, according to the international laws and United Nations conventions and resolutions, should be adopted to resolve the disputes like Iraq and Kashmir.
Referring to the Kashmir issue, Mushahid said that Pakistan has been playing important role in promoting peace in the region and was involved in the negotiation process, with interest to resolve it peacefully.
He said that relevant civilised international procedures should he adopted to resolve the disputes.
Mushahid appreciated the recent visit of Kashmiri leaders from Occupied Kashmir to Islamabad and said that these leaders, including Omer Abdullah, had lauded Pakistan's proposals of demilitarisation and self-rule to resolve the Kashmir issue.
About release of PML-N leader Saad Rafiq, he said that there should be 'general amnesty' for all political leaders in the country to promote goodwill in politics and enhance political culture and political harmony.
Referring to political harmony in the country, Mushahid said that despite having the government of an opposition party in NWFP, there was not a single example of any effort, by the federal government, to destabilise or create any disturbance in the provincial government.
He said that the present PML government was facing criticism from the opposition, but was responding it politically, and never used force against its political opponents.
He said that the government has taken along the opposition in all affairs as treasury and opposition are two integral parts of democracy.
He said that the present government had been facing one of the strongest oppositions in the history but there was no clash of the government with opposition and the government was facing the opposition with patience, in a humble and diplomatic way.
Referring to the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, Tariq said that Shujaat Hussain asked Opposition leader Fazal-ur-Rehman and Amin Fahim to give names for CEC but they did not give any name. He said that the government then appointed a permanent and neutral person as Chief of Election Commission, which was a demand of the opposition.
Mushahid said that for the first time, the government had given representation to the Leader of Opposition in the National Security Council, which was a new example in parliamentary history.
About negotiations with PML-N, Mushahid said it was his wish that all PML families should join hands before the next election.
Answering a question about election of leader of opposition in the Senate, Mushahid said that the Senate Chairman would take the decision according to rules and regulations and there would be no delay this time as it was delayed in the previous session.
He said that PML "is the first political party" that had announced party elections, and added that PML President Shujaat Hussain had ordered that these elections would be completed by August this year.
