Chairman Higher Education Commission and Advisor to Prime Minister for Science and Technology Dr Atta-ur-Rehman has said that government would allocate sufficient funds for research to private sector.
"President General Pervez Musharraf has constituted a three member committee which will outline the procedure to transfer the public money to private sector", Dr Rehman said while addressing the board of trustees of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital. Chairman Senate Muhmmadmian Sooomro and Regional Director World Health Organisation Dr Hussain Al-Gaziri were also present.
Dr Rehman said that the committee is working hard to meet the requirements of the assignment it was given and will present its recommendations to President very soon.
He said that Pakistan is the only country in the world where the salary of the university teacher is three to four times more than a federal minister. "It is the wish of government that education sector must be the first choice of educated people while choosing their carrier," he added.
He said that every year almost 500 Pakistani students go abroad to acquire PhD degree on government expenses. He said that HEC has created a link between Pakistani universities and international research institutes. At the time some 2,000 research journals are on the panel of Pakistani educational institutions.
On the occasion Regional Director World Health Organisation Dr Hussain Al-Gaziri applauded the role of Al-Shifa Eye Hospital in fighting against blindness. He also gave the International Partnership Award to the President Al-Shifa Eye Trust Lieutenant General Jehandad Khan (Retd).
The president of trust also offered the post of lifetime patron of the hospital to Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, which he accepted.
