Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has demanded an immediate release of water in river and canals for Kharif cultivation as late release of water would delay the cultivation and crop yield.
The demand was made in a meeting held here at DCA Hall on Sunday, presided by senior vice president Mir Murad Ali Khan Talpur and attended among others by Dr Shah Nawaz Shah, Akhund Ghulam Muhammad Siddiqui, Misri Mallah advocate and Khair Muhammad Narejo.
The chamber expressed concern that Indus River System Authority (Irsa) had pledged to close Taunsa and Panjnad canals and release water for Sindh but its decision has not been implemented as yet.
The chamber said that since the crops in Sindh are cultivated earlier than Punjab, the Irsa and Irrigation authorities should release the water for Sindh immediately.
The chamber observed that lining of water courses was right decision but it asked for lining of distributaries and canals too. It expressed concern on releasing sewage of Hyderabad into Phuleli canal which was causing spread of water borne diseases in areas covering Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin and Thatta district.
It welcomed formation of committee by Zila Nazim to control the discharge of sewage water and demanded that a representative of SCA be taken on the committee.
The chamber asked growers of Sindh to inform it of their arrears of sugarcane prices outstanding against sugar mills so that the matter could be taken up for recovery at provincial level.
