Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) Chairman Asif Zaman Ansari said on Monday that enough sugar stocks were available in the country. Speaking in a PTV programme, he said total consumption of the sugar in the country was about 3.8 million metric tones per annum.
While according to estimate about 3.9 million metric tones sugar was available in the country. To stabilise the sugar price, the government had allowed to import duty-free sugar raw and refined, he added.
The TCP Chairman said that so far about 55,000 metric tones of raw sugar had been imported, adding the TCP had also imported about 191,000 metric tones of sugar.
Asif Zaman said carry over stock of 3,75000 metric tonnes of sugar was also available with the TCP.
He said on the directive of the government, the TCP had allocated its sugar stocks for Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan and Canteen Stores Department (CSD) aimed at ensuring persistent supplies of sugar at affordable rates.
About 50,000 metric tonnes of sugar was being imported from India at the rate of 478 dollars per metric ton in a bid to further ease the sugar supply situation in the country, he added.
