Once again the Players Championship promises a complete test to the world's best golfers, but even if he plays Tiger Woods may find his mind elsewhere.
Woods was not at the Sawgrass TPC on Wednesday, skipping his final practice round as he was rumoured to be in California visiting his father, Earl, who has prostate cancer.
Woods's manager said in a statement that the world number one golfer would be back in time for his Thursday tee time, but it remained to be seen how focused he could be. World number two Vijay Singh has no such distractions as he tries to improve on a sketchy record in this event.
He was second in 2001, but has only one other top-10 finish in 13 starts.
Singh has been dissatisified with his long game for most of the year, but said he saw some promising signs last week at the Bay Hill Invitational, where he finished seventh.
Last year's leaderboard was packed with straight-hitters, a testament to the punishing rough. Fred Funk, year in and out the most accurate driver on tour, won last year. Like Singh, Phil Mickelson hasn't enjoyed much success here, posting only two top-10 finishes in 12 starts.
