Christian and human rights activists staged a protest in front of the Afghan embassy in Washington on Friday to urge the Kabul government to free a man who faces execution for becoming a Christian.
More than 20 stood opposite the embassy chanting, "Christianity is not a crime. Free Abdul Rahman!" and holding signs that read "He's not insane, he's Christian."
Rahman was detained earlier this month after his parents reported him to authorities for turning to Christianity from Islam.
An Afghan court could sentence him to execution but the authorities said they were looking for a solution. A senior Afghan government official said Rahman would be released soon.
The Washington protesters said President George W. Bush should intervene to help Rahman. Bush said this week that the case was "deeply troubling".
"This is more than just one man...keep in our prayers all those who are imprisoned and risk similar fate in other countries," a priest from Christian Solidarity International said in a prayer outside the embassy.
