"The post-9/11 era has rapidly transformed the dynamics of threat perception, response and the type of forces required to deal with emerging situations.
"Pak Marines and Special Services Group (Navy) are poised to become key players in the emerging war scenarios which are likely to be localised and prolonged in nature.
This was stated by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir, in his closing remarks on 'Marines & Special Services Group (Navy)' seminar at Baharia Auditorium here on Saturday.
"In today's scenario," Adm Afzal said, "the importance of special covert operations, asymmetric warfare and low intensity conflicts has increased manifold. Pakistan Navy is fully cognisant of the importance of special forces and marines in our region and has focused attention on the development of these vital arms of the force."
The Naval Chief pointed out that acquisition of VBSS boats, Military Assault Boats and Hovercraft has significantly enhanced the capabilities of these special arms.
He said that Naval warfare has now transformed from "war at sea" to "war from the sea" and "forward from the sea", thus the focus of the navies has shifted from blue waters to brown waters (littoral warfare).
Adm Tahir said that in the emerging conflict, Pak Marines and SSG(N) are poised to become key players in the emerging war scenarios which are likely to be localised and prolonged in nature.
"Pakistan Navy is fully cognisant of the situation and is making all-out efforts for the development of Pak Marines and SSG(N)."
Earlier, addressing the first session, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Haroon, said that importance of such seminars in promoting pursuits for professional excellence could not be denied.
He urged the PN officers to critically analyse the ideas floated and grasp maximum from this professionally rewarding and educative sessions.
Officers from Marines and SSG (N) also presented papers on various topics relating to operations, threat perception and future strategies. The seminar was attended by a large number of senior officers and officers from special arms.
