Sri Lanka Consul General Ms Manel de Silva met the manufacturers and exporters of knitwear products here on Saturday and discussed with them areas of co-operation.
She informed them that her country had invested a lot in human resource development and that education, coupled with technical training, had enhanced the productivity and efficiency of labour forces in the knitwear sector there.
It mainly happened due to human factor and that was why Sri Lanka had been able to promote the apparel sector as a major contributor towards national income, she said. Now, she added, her country's knitwear and garment industry was in a position to provide technical training facility to its counterpart industry in Pakistan.
Shahzad Azam Khan, Central Chairman of Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA), said that collaboration in technical training was the main area that could produce positive results.
Upon this, Ms de Silva said her country might be interested to import knitted and woven fabrics from Pakistan but for this purpose Pak businessmen should visit her country to meet and negotiate with their counterparts there.
Earlier, Dr Khurram Tariq, Chairman PHMA in his address of welcome said that Pakistan's garment industry was now mature enough to compete internationally and to meet the challenges emerging in the post-quote regime.
He pointed out that knitwear industry in Pakistan was employing Sri Lankan technicians to upgrade the level of technical skills. He also underlined the need for further enhancing the areas of mutual co-operation between the two countries.
