Change of attitude in society was imperative for providing social justice to women and local government institutions could play important role in this regard. Women are half of the total population and without involving them country could not prosper.
These views were expressed by the participants of the Round Table Conference on "Improvement of Women Access to Justice" held here on Tuesday under the aegis of Consumers Rights Commission of Pakistan (CRCP).
European Commission (EC) had collaborated the CRCP in organising the event.
Project Manager CRCP, Amir Ijaz told the conference that CRCP had started a pilot project on experimental basis and formed Women Lead Groups consisting of 15 women belonging to different walks of life. The experimental groups were constituted in four union councils of Rawalpindi including Dhok Kashmirian, Dhok Kala Khan, Chak Jalal Din and Girja, he added.
These groups, he said, were busy in imparting managerial and capacity building training to women. By virtue of this training the women of these union councils have succeeded to form Complaint Cells at union council level as mentioned in Local Government Ordinance, he added.
He said that the main objective of the project was to empower the women and strengthen the legal institution. The Women Lead Groups had also many meetings with the local market committee and the officials of utility departments.
The participants including the representatives of Executive District Officers and high ups of District Government, said that the development project should be built by the government but owned by community for sustainable progress.
