The release of one of the greatest cinematic epics and most widely viewed classics of Indian cinema, Mughal-e-Azam, all over Pakistan will be announced at a press conference here on March 30.
The magnum opus Indian movie of all times is being launched in Pakistan with all the required permissions and support from the government of Pakistan. Akbar Asif of Akbar Asif Entertainment (UK) Limited and Mandviwalla Entertainment will jointly announce details of the launch.
Akbar Asif is the son the legendary Indian film producer K. Asif and lives in London while the movie is being distributed in Pakistan by Mandviwalla Entertainment.
Recently, Akbar Asif had confirmed that the gesture shown by President General Pervez Musharraf to allow the exhibition of "my father's epic film is deeply appreciated by me and my family.
"Mandviwalla, whose company Mandviwalla Entertainment is distributing the film, is a close friend of the family and I have every faith in him and his team to do an unprecedented job in releasing the film," he said.
Mughal-e-Azam is not just a film, but also a historical epic. It took 15 years in making and was released in India by K. Asif in India in 1960, causing a sensation in the film world. The movie proved a box office hit and received accolades from cinegoers.
Now for the first time in 40 years, after Sheikh Mukhtar's "Nur Jehan" and Amin Chaudhry's "Kashish," which were released during General Zia-ul-Haq's regime, this is the third Indian film, which will be shown in cinemas countrywide here.
Akbar Asif's vision is that this film might help cement relations between India and Pakistan. Proceeds from its screening will go to charity. As was expected, this event has had intensive media coverage all over Pakistan. However, some false reports were circulated that the release of the film has been cancelled.
The distributors had to clarify that the Central Board of Film Censors, Islamabad, has already approved the film that will be released during the next quarter of 2006.
