More than 1,000 metric ton sugar is being sold across the country every day through various outlets of Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan (USCP), at subsidised rate of Rs 27.50 per kilogram.
USCP Managing Director Brigadier Hafeez Ahmad told newsmen from Islamabad on Wednesday that a total of 32,000 metric ton sugar was being supplied every month to all utility stores for onward distribution to people at their doorsteps through mobile teams.
He said the uninterrupted supply of sugar had reduced the panic buying seen earlier, as it was now available at all stores and mobile sale points to genuine domestic consumers.
He disclosed that the two-kilo sugar packing was a convenient and popular amount among the masses in the low-income groups, as that size was usually sufficient to fulfil their domestic consumption.
According to an estimate, some 600,000 two-kg packets were being sold daily in the country, while about 100 ton sugar was being sold daily in Lahore alone by the USCP at its various outlets, sale points and mobile units.
When contacted, USCP Regional Manager Lahore Region Azmatullah said that sugar was now available at all the 30 Utility Stores of the corporation located in various areas of the city.
To ensure easy availability of the commodity to the masses, 10 new sale points have been established at Sunday Bazars, while 15 mobile teams selling sugar cover most of the low-income areas of the city, he added.
He advised people not to stock sugar, as it was now available in abundance, adding there was no restriction on the purchase of sugar and they could buy according to their domestic requirement.
