Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Haroon Farooki has impressed upon the European Union to provide a level playing field and an early grant of GSP plus status to Pakistan.
He said this during a meeting with Deputy Head of British Deputy High Commission here Ron Rimmer; Desk Officer of Pakistan, South Asia Group, Foreign and Commonwealth Office Leo Tomlin, Pakistan Team and BDHC Political Officer in Karachi Shahryar Khan Niazi, who called on him here on Wednesday.
The KCCI President was of the view that under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regime, economic relations between Pakistan and EU member countries had become more important.
He also appreciated the role of UK in supporting Pakistan's stand for the GSP plus status by European Union.
He said: "Due to higher taxes/duties on our goods, as compared to our competitors, in the EU and other markets, we are facing a lot of difficulties in boosting our exports."
Welcoming the delegates, Haroon Farooki said that the government policies were quite conducive and business friendly, both for local and foreign investors.
He said that the economic activity in the whole country had increased manifold, which showed the confidence of business community in the policies of the government.
The country, he said, achieved a record 8.4 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate, and this year over seven percent GDP growth was expected.
Exports had increased, foreign reserves were building and foreign direct investment had increased considerably, he said.-PR
