Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli has urged the need for national unity and coherence to make the country strong and prosperous as visualised by the leaders and workers of independence movement.
"We have to lead Pakistan towards a strong, prosperous and civilised society and nation," Anisa said while speaking at a function organised in connection with Pakistan Day by the FG Margalla College for Women F-7/4 here on Thursday.
The college is celebrating the "Pakistan Day Week" from March 30 to April 6.
Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli added the present government, under the dynamic leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf, was committed to achieve the ideals and objectives of a strong, prosperous and a successful Pakistan. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Muslim leaders before the creation of the country conceived the same.
She, however, added there was need to wage a united campaign against the problems of poverty and illiteracy to achieve the objectives of civilised society. She urged the need for increased women-education and awareness, saying the education of women, who constitute over 50 per cent of the population, could help in creating a truly civilised nation and society.
She said the present government, which was already making increased allocations for education and health sectors, was now targeting to take the education budget to four per cent of the GDP so that we could achieve higher literacy.
The Minister highlighted various challenges faced by the country since its independence through an historical account of various events on the socio-economic and political fronts.
She, however, added the government was fully alive to the current challenges with the commitment to take the country forward.
Anisa Zeb underlined the unprecedented growth and freedom of print and electronic media as one of the major achievements of the government.
She informed the participants that Pemra laws were being amended to enable Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to check illegal operations of any channel and take punitive measures against those violating the code of conduct.
The Minister appreciated the college for arranging Pakistan Day Week and said such events incite and renew the patriotism and feelings of love amongst the people.
She also announced Rs 1000 each for students who presented Naat and Milli songs during the function.
Punjab University Dean Professor Dr Mughees-ud-Din Shaikh, while speaking on the occasion, appreciated the college for the spirit behind the celebrations of Pakistan Day Week.
He stressed on the need of dedication and direction for the young generation and to encourage the students to meet the challenges of the time and try to stop cultural invasion by following the motto "Country Comes First."
Later, Anisa Zeb distributed prizes among the winners of Essay competition. First prize was won by Gul Fatima, respectively, with Saima Amin Malik and Robina Qayyum getting second and third prizes.
