Commerce minister Humayun Akhtar Khan has said the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Malaysia would be signed soon. Talking to newsmen after a meeting with the Malaysian delegation at a local hotel on Friday, he said the Malaysian government has already decreased duties on Pakistani exports.
The minister said the government has focused on selected foreign buyers during the current fiscal year and as a result of this policy more than 1000 buyers representing 157 countries are here in Karachi to visit the Expo.
On a query, he said the government is paying attention to the problem of value-addition of local products. "We used to export our cotton in the past but now we are importing it from different countries," he added.
He said members of the Malaysian delegation have expressed their interest to import towels, other textile products and scrape from Pakistan. He said the Netherlands delegation has shown interest in installation of water purification plants in Pakistan, besides exchanging knowledge and expertise in the aircraft manufacturing and engineering sectors.
He informed the delegation that provision of clean drinking water to the people is amongst the top priority of President General Pervez Musharraf.
"The government will extend full co-operation to the Dutch company in the installation of water filtration plants in the country," he assured. An MoU was also signed between the Netherlands company VMO and the Pakistan Engineering Board on Thursday, while one such MoU was signed a year ago.
