Phil Mickelson posted the lowest 36-hole total of his career on Friday to take a six-shot lead at the halfway stage of the 5.3 million-dollar BellSouth Classic.
The 15-year PGA Tour pro indicated he has hit form in perfect time for next week's US Masters by adding a seven-under 65 on Friday to his course record-equalling 63 for a tournament-record 36-hole total of 16-under 128. He was six in front of JJ Henry, who fired a 65.
Henry registered four birdies on the front nine and three on the back in his bogey-free effort.
Playing late in the afternoon, Henry moved a shot ahead of Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, whose morning 64 was the best round of the day.
