South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co, the world's largest shipbuilder, said on Saturday it has won a record $2.6 billion worth of orders in March to build 24 vessels.
Hyundai said in a statement the 24 ships included 14 very large crude oil tankers, five liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, one liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and four petroleum product carriers for unidentified companies.
The orders also include $900 million worth for eight vessels for its unlisted affiliate Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co, the company said, adding it has won the orders from unidentified companies in the Middle East, Asia and Belgium.
Samsung Heavy Industries Co, the world's No 3, also said on Friday it had won ship orders totalling $1.35 billion from companies in South Korea, Qatar and Greece.
South Korea's Hanjin Heavy Industries Co also said it had won a 188.3 billion won order from an unidentified firm in the Americas for an LNG carrier.
News of the ship orders flurry came despite worries a firm won could hurt the competitiveness abroad of South Korean firms and as data showed on Saturday exports in March grew a faster-than-expected 12.9 percent from a year earlier.
