A new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis has revealed that grape seeds extract helps control blood pressure. This study was the first clinical trial to assess the benefits of grape seeds extract in people who had metabolic syndrome.
This syndrome is a combination of the factors that increase the risk of developing heart disease and includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat and high cholesterol levels in the blood.
In the current study, which was spread over duration of 30 days, researchers tracked the health of 24 patients with metabolic syndrome. These patients were divided into three groups of eight people.
One group received a placebo, while another received 150 milligrams of a new grape seeds extract. The third group received 300 milligrams of the same extract.
Blood pressure was measured and recorded 12 hours after the ingestion of their supplements. "Participants in the two groups receiving grape seeds extract experienced an equal degree of reduced blood pressure.
The average drop in systolic pressure was 12 millimeters. The average drop in diastolic pressure was 8 millimeters," said C. Tissa Kappagoda, the lead researcher of the study.
Systolic pressure refers to the upper limit of the blood pressure and is related to the force with which the blood flows out of the heart. Diastolic pressure on the other hand is the lower limit of blood pressure and is related to the force with which the blood flows into the heart.
It is estimated that many people have metabolic syndrome. The current study attempted to assess the impact of grape seeds extract on this syndrome and also found that patients who took 300 milligrams of the extract had" reduced serum oxidised LDL cholesterol levels."
