Five alleged activists of banned outfit, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, were sentenced to death here on Tuesday in prisoners van attack case. They were also fined and ordered to pay compensation to the heirs of the deceased and to the injured.
Karachi Division Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC-V) Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch pronounced the judgement on Tuesday afternoon and sentenced the accused, Muhammad Faisal alias Pehalwan, Sabir Ali Waseem, Mazhar-ul-Hasan alias Umer Dhobi, Muhammad Muzammil alias Chacha, and Malik Tassaduq to death on charge of killing a prison cop and an under trial prisoner (UTP).
According to prosecution, the accused intercepted a prison van carrying UTPs back to Central Prison Karachi from City Courts complex in the jurisdiction of PS Nabi Bux, Police Constable Shakeel Arshad and UTP Saquib were killed due to the firing while Head Constable Sauleheen, PC Mubarak and a passer-by Muhammad Usman sustained fire arms injuries.
The court on Tuesday held the accused guilty of offences they were charged with and sentenced them to death on two counts of murder. The accused were ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 100,000 to heirs of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to persons who sustained injuries due to firing by the accused.
The court also sentenced them to a total imprisonment of 13 years and to pay Rs 5,000 (each accused). In default they were ordered to suffer further imprisonment of 32 months.
The accused have seven days time 'to prefer appeal against their conviction and sentence under Anti Terrorism Act.
