High water levels continue to block shipping between east and west Europe on the Danube and Elbe rivers in Germany, navigation authorities said on Wednesday.
The Danube remains closed to shipping between Straubing and Passau in south Germany despite an overnight fall in water levels.
This was stopping the main inland shipping route between west Europe, Austria and east Europe. The main cargoes include grains, petroleum products, coal and chemicals.
High waters were also stopping shipping on a stretch of the Elbe around Dresden in east Germany. The river ports of Dresden, Riesa and Torgau were closed to shipping and cargo was being transferred to rail.
