Thousands of people ran out of homes and buildings in India's western Gujarat state on Thursday after an earthquake hit the region, witnesses said, but there were no reports of casualties or major damage.
The earthquake, 5.5 in magnitude, was centred near the town of Rapar, over 900 km (600 miles) north-east of Gujarat's main city of Ahmedabad, where its effects were also felt, said the Indian Meteorological Department in New Delhi.
"I was in my third floor apartment when the table and fans started to shake. My daughter and I just rushed outside," said Renu Mittal, a fashion designer in Ahmedabad, a city of 5.5 million people with many tall buildings.
She stood in the garden of the building with dozens of other residents, reluctant to go back in after the quake hit at 2329 local time (1759 GMT).
"There are no reports of casualties or damage until now from anywhere," Gujarat's top police office A.K. Bhargava told Reuters.
